هذا الكتاب... تتمّة لمنظومة الإمام عبد القادر البغدادي بوضع دراسة مستقلة في بيان الشاهد النحوي في الأمثال العربية في شرح الكافية للرضي التي أولاها البغدادي عناية لم يسبق إليها، فأقام على مصادر السماع فيها ثلاثة شروح أحدها: شرح الشواهد الشعرية في كتابه الخزانة، والثاني: شرح الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة، والثالث: شرح أقوال الإمام علي رضي الله عنه.... ولم يفرد الإمام البغدادي الأمثال بمصنف مستقل كما صنع مع نظائرها من مصادر السماع؛ فيبين الشاهد النحوي فيها - وإن نص على أن كتب الأمثال من مصادر كتابه الخزانة...
ولقد كان لعلماء اللغة والنحو عناية خاصة بالمثل ظهرت في إعتدادهم بالأمثال بإعتبارها نبعاً من منابع اللغة الغنية بغريبها وشاذها؛ ولذلك اتجهت أنظار اللغويين وأصحاب المعاجم للإستشهاد بها على ألفاظ اللغة وغريبها وحشدوا كمّاً كبيراً من الأمثال في معاجمهم كما صنع الجوهري في الصحاح وابن منظور في اللسان والزبيدي في تاج العروس، وذهبوا إلى ما هو أبعد من ذلك؛ إذ صار للأمثال مكانة خاصة؛ فعدوا المثل مصدراً من مصادر السماع إذا كان قائله من عصور الإحتجاج في اللغة، وقد أدرك الميداني هذا فجعل أمثال المولِّدين في مؤخرة كتابه مجمع الأمثال بعد الأمثال التي قيلت في عصور الإحتجاج.
ولم يقف إهتمام علماء العرب بالأمثال عند تلك الغاية، بل تجاوزوا ذلك فلا تكاد تقع عيناك على مؤلف في الأدب، أو اللغة، أو النحو إلا وتجد صاحبه قد جعل في الأمثال العربية مأربه الذي أمَّ، فاعتمد عليها في تزيين كلامه، وتدعيم أقواله، وبيان حجته.
وظهرت مشاهد هذا الإهتمام في سريانها في مصنفاتهم، حتى أنك تجد إمام النحاة سيبويه قد عقد باباً لما جرى مجرى الأمثال في الثبوت وعدم التغيير، وكثرة الإستعمال، وهناك من يكثر منها في مصنفاته كالمبرد، وابن السراج، وأبي علي الفارسي، وابن مالك، والرضي، وغيرهم.
عليه فقد قامت هذه الدراسة بحصر تلك الأمثال وبيان الشواهد فيها سدّاً لباب الأعذار عن الأخيار، وأحسب ذلك بمثابة إكمال تلك المنظومة الرائعة التي صنعها البغدادي.
