من أهم ما تقوم عليه اللغة العربية وغيرها من اللغات الحية جانبان أصيلان هما: الجانب الصوتي والجانب الدلالي.
وقد اهتم العرب منذ بداية دراسة اللغة بالجانب الصوتي، بوصف اللغة كما قال ابن جني: أصوات يعبر بها كل قوم عن أغراضهم، فأعطوا لهذا الجانب حقه من البحث والدراسة، وعلى الجانب الصوتي قام الصرف العربي، وبحث الإعلال والإبدال، وعلى هذا الجانب اعتمد الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي في كتابه العين عندما استخدم طريقة التلقليبات الصوتية في حصر ألفاظ اللغة، وللعرب قواعدها الصوتية وضوابطها المعيارية التي لا تحيد عنها، وتضبط من خلالهها أصوات اللغة، وتلجأ إليها عند الحكم على الكلام.
أما في الجانب الدلالي فقد اقتصر البحث فيه على المعاجم والدراسات التي قامت حولها وقليل من التلميحات في بعض الكتب اللغوية. ولذلك فإن هذه المقاييس والضوابط المعيارية تضعف عند الحديث عن الجانب الدلالي فليس هناك مقياس دلالي قوي ومحكم يمكن من خلاله الحكم على دلالة الكلمات ويمكن الاعتماد عليه في ضبط الدلالة، وتحديد أصالتها أو تطورها.
ولعل أبرز الأسباب في ذلك، أن دراسة اللغة تقوم على المنهج الوصفي، والوصول للجوانب المعيارية والقياسية فيها يحتاج إلى مزيد نظر وتأمل، ومن أسباب هذا التمييز بين الأصوات والدلالات أن اللغة في جانبها الدلالي أسرع تطوراً وتغيراً من الأصوات.
لذلك اعتنت هذه الدراسة بتتبع محاولات بناء المعيار الدلالي في الدلالة المعجمية عند أهل اللغة قديماً وحديثاً، والتركيز على أهم وأبرز ما قيل فيه.
