يضم الكتاب مجموعة من المقالات فرقت بينها المناسبات عشرين عاماً لكني خيطاً من النسق الفكري قد ألف بينها، وقد رأى كاتبها جمعها تحت عنوان (في وحدة الحضارة) لأنها تحدثت عن الوحدة في كل أمر تم تناوله. وحدة الأمة العربية، موحدة الثقافة، ووحدة الوطنية، ووحدة الخطا في بناء المستقبل. تلك مظاهر الوحدة التاريخية والتراثية التي أظلها الإسلام نمطاً تنامى على مر الزمن، فطوى في تضاعيفه المعتقدات والأديان السماوية، وأوى إلى ظله جهد الإنسان يثري المسيرة فكراً وفناً واقتباساً من الثقافات والأمم التي خلت. وقد منحت تلك المسيرة الإنسان قيمة تميزت بقدسية غيبية تعلي من شأنه، وتبسط له أديم الكرامة، وتفتح له الأفق واسعاً، بقدر ما اتسعت رؤية الدين لتنظيم الكون وفطرة الله التي فطر الناس عليها.
تلك رؤية محورية اتجهت إليها هذه المقالات منذ الستينات حين تسنى للكاتب الإسهام ببعض الجهود الفكرية الثقافية. شملت هذه المحاضرات المواضيع التالية العدالة الاجتماعية في الإسلام من خلال مسؤولية المجتمع عن الفرد، ومسؤولية الفرد عن المجتمع. أهمية توحيد الخطا في بناء الأمة لتصبح مالكة زمام الإسهام في صنع مصير العالم، كفاءة المجتمع العربي لإعادة صياغة وحدته، الوحدة في مفاهيم الوطنية والثقافة الجامعة، وحدة اللبنانيين ضمن التعددية، التراث ورؤية المستقبل.
