يعرض هذا الكتاب نص محاضرة للمفكر الإسلامي المحامي عمر كامل مسقاوي بعنوان "نظرات في الفكر الإسلامي ومالك بن بني" ألقى الكاتب المحاضرة في المغرب إستجابة لرغبة صديقه الدكتور عبد السلام الهراس، أستاذ الادب الأندلسي في جامعة فاس أثناء زيارته للمغرب في ربيع عام 1978م.
تتناول المحاضرة نقداً للحركات الفكرية والسياسية في الشرق الإسلامي وبالأخص فكرة يجتمع فيها الكاتب (مالك بن نبي) وهي "الإستعمار والقابلية للإستعمار" حيث كتب بن نبي مقالة رائعة وهي "الإستعمار في نفوسنا".
اعتبر الكاتب أن أفكار بن نبي تنطلق لا لتضيف في المجتمع الإسلامي معرفة جديدة بالفقه، أو علماً مستخلصاً من تجارب الحضارة الحديثة، بل تنظيم هذه المعارف في مفاهيم تربوية تسير بالإنسان خطوة متقدمة...
أما بن نبي فاعتبر أن الفكر الإسلامي ملزم بتصفية الأفكار الميتة التي أبعدته عن مشاكله الإجتماعية حيث قادته أسلمته للمجتمع إلى "نظرية تجريدية" من العقل الأوروبي، فهو - برأيه - قد مثل في تكوينه الثقافي مقبرة.
وعلى هذا، فقد خلَّف الإتصال بالإستعمار في مختلف أشكاله، القابلية للإستعمار في مختلف صورها، وهي ذاتها خلقت عزله بين المثقف ومجتمعه وحالت دون تأثير النخبة في إطارها الإجتماعي.
هذا، وقد عرض الكاتب لمجمل أفكار رفاعة الطبهطاوي ومحمد عبده والجبرتي وجمال الدين الأفغاني وآخرون تشكل أفكارهم نقطة تحول مهمة في الفكر الإسلامي الحديث...
