يحاول ماركوز، الذي يوصف بأنّه "فيلسوف" الثورة الجديدة، أن يبرهن، من خلال تراث التحليل النفسي والفلسفة والعلوم الإجتماعية وعلم الجمال، أنّ "ذلك الإجماع على ضرورة مراقبة غرائز الحياة وتقييد الليبيدو إنّما كان دائماً تعبيراً عن القمع ولمصلحة إرادة السيطرة، كما أن الأداة لإستمرار القمع والسيطرة".
وهكذا يحاول ماركوز أن يقرن التحرّر الغريزي بالتحرّر الإجتماعي... إنّه يرفض التراث الفلسفي الغربي القائم على تمجيد الإنتصار والغلبة، سواء بإسم العقل أو بإسم إرادة القوة أو بإسم التقدًّم، وهو يرفض كذلك في ميدان الأخلاق إحتكارَ الذات الدنيا، ويعكس الآية فيعتبر أنّ حيوية الفرد إنّما تكمن أولاً في عضويّته، وأنَّ مطالبة هذه العضوية بحقّ الإرتواء الكامل هي أصل السعادة وأصل الحرية وأصل التقدُّم.
ويرى ماركوز في هذا الكتاب أنَّه إذا أزيل التسلُّط، فليست ثمة حاجة إلى تقنين الحاجات وكبت الحيوية وقهر سعادة الإنسان، فالحضارة التكنولوجية إذا حُرّرتْ من يد الإستغلال الطبقي إستطاعت أن تتيح للإنسان مجالاً رحباً لإرواء حاجاته الحيوية، وتحوّل مبدأ الصراع على الوجود: من دفاع الإنسان ضدّ الإنسان بالحرب والقهر والعبودية وردود الفعل العدوانيّة والإنحرافية أو الثورة والتجردية، إلى تنمية "تصعيد ذاتي" من نوع جديد تصبح فيه المراقبةُ القسريةُ على حرية تحقق الغرائز مراقبةً شعوريةً لمنع قيام نظام جديد من السيطرة والقمع الفردي والإجتماعي.
وهكذا يبنى مركوز تفاؤليّته على أساس حتمية إنقلاب حضارة القمع من داخل بنيتها بالذات.
