-هل تساءل اللسانيون العرب عن القيمة المنهجية لما يقومون به مقارنة بما هو مجرد من كتابات لسانية بالنسبة إلى لغات مثل الإنجليزية أو الفرنسية أو الإسبانية أو الألمانية أو اليابانية؟.
إن الأسئلة المطروحة في ثنايا الكتاب تندرج في إطار تصور محدد للعمل اللساني الذي يفترض مبدئياً أن يكون هو السائد في البحث اللساني العربي الحديث، وهو تصور لا يختلف عما هو متداول في لسانيات لغات أخرى.
