لم تحظ نظرية لغوية معاصرة بما حظيت به نظرية النحو التوليدي من دراسات وبحوث، تبرز بوضوح إهتمام اللغويين المعاصرين ومتابعاتهم المستمرة لهذه النظرية، في شتى مناحيها التصورية والمنهجية.
ويعود الإهتمام النوعي والإقبال المنقطع النظير باللسانيات التوليدية إلى المنطلقات الفكرية والعلمية الدقيقة والمضبوطة التي قامت عليها هذه النظرية؛ وهي في مجملها منطلقات مُختلفة عن تلك التي تأسست عليها منذ مطلع القرن العشرين اللسانيات البنيوية الأمريكية التي ظهر النحو التوليدي في أحضانها.
ويقدم الكتاب أرضية واضحة ودقيقة عن منطلقات نظرية النحو التوليدي التحولي التي وضعها تشومسكي، والإطار العام للتصورات والأسس النظرية التي قامت عليها، أو أسهمت في ظهورها، والقضايا اللغوية التي ساعدت على تطورها من نموذج إلى آخر خلال أزيد من ستة عقود.
والنحو التوليدي مثل أي نظرية حية قابلة للإدراك من خلال تطور تاريخها المعرفي، بحيث إن كل مفهوم في النحو التوليدي يحيل على مضمون نظري معين في فترة معينة، أو من زاوية نموذج معين في علاقة بمفاهيم أخرى متقاربة او متباعدة، وربما كان تجاهل هذا المعطى "التاريخي لمكونات النظرية التوليدية" والعلائقي بينها من طرف العديد من الكتابات العربية، بالرغم من أصالتها، وعمقها العلمي وقيمتها النظرية وراء عدم الإستفادة منها في الثقافة اللغوية العربية وإن كانت الحاجة الملحة إليها قائمة.
