يتناول هذا الكتاب الأسس النظرية والمنهجية التي تقوم عليها اللسانيات البنيوية بدءاً بتحديد المتن اللغوي وانتهاءً بتحليل الجملة إلى مكوِّناتها المباشرة؛ ويقدّم أيضاً أبرز الاتجاهات اللسانية البنيوية، متمثّلةً في مدرسة جنيف وحلقة براغ والغلوسيماتية ومارتينيه ويتحدث أيضاً عن اللسانيات الأميركية ورائديها الكبيرين سابير وبلومفيلد بشكل مستفيض يمكِّنه تقديم علم نافع لكلّ مهتم باللسانيات البنيوية، هذا من جهة؛ ومن جهة ثانية، يحرص الكتاب على إطلاع القارئ العربي على التطوّرات الأخيرة بشأن بعض اللسانيين المؤسِّسين أمثال سوسير حيث تمّ تقديم لمحة موجزة عن النقاش الذي يثيره فكر الرجل في الساحة اللسانية في أوروبا ولا سيما في فرنسا وسويسرا، وهو النقاش الذي لا يُعثر له على أثر في الثقافة اللسانية العربية الحديثة. ويستعرض الكتاب بصورة شاملة ملامح التعدد النظري والمنهجي في اللسانيات البنيوية Linguistique structurale أو ما يعرف أيضاً باللسانيات الوصفية Linguistique descriptive دون إغفال الملامح المشتركة بين مختلف التصوّرات والاتجاهات، وهي ملامح قد تكون بارزة في هذا الاتجاه، وقد لا تكون كذلك في اتجاه آخر؛ كما أنّ الكتاب قد تتبّع بدقة ما عرفته اللسانيات من تطوّرات كبرى في أسسها التصورية بالقياس للمقاربات السابقة عليها، وما حصل من انتقال معرفي من نموذج لساني إلى آخر أو من إطار نظري ومنهجي محدّد إلى آخر، مع ما يصاحب ذلك من استمرار أو انقطاع إبستيمولوجي يتيح الوقوف على حقيقة تطور المبادئ الكبرى في اللسانيات والنفوذ إلى عمق تماثل أسسها النظرية والمنهجية بين مختلف المدارس اللسانية البنيوية أو اختلافها.
