هناك مثل شامي قديم يقول:"أول الرقص حنجلة"... يقدم كتاب يوميات شامية قراءة لخالة تاريخية لمجتمع مدينة دمشق ينطبق عليها هذا المثل الشعبي هي القرن الثامن عشر. فقد بيّنت الدراسات الجديدة للمجتمعات العثمانية في المراكز العمرانيّة الرئيسية، كاسطنبول ودمشق والقاهرة وحلب، أنّه ظهرت في تلك الفترة حالة من "الحنجلة الاجتماعية" تمثّلت ببدايات الانفتاح الاجتماعي، وانصهار الفوارق الطبقيّة، وتحد غير مسبوق للتقاليد والعادات والقيم الاجتماعيّة، والحضور البارز والجريء للمرأة في المدينة، وبروز الطبقة الوسطى، وظهور نماذج جديدة من الفن والأدب، وتوسع مجال الحريات الفردية والجماعية، وتفعيل للفضاء العام، وانحسار القيود الدينيّة على الممارسات الاجتماعيّة في الفضاءات العامّة للمدينة... والسؤال الذي يطرحه المثل الشامي: ما هي حالة "رقص" التي يُفترض أن تؤول إليها حالة الحنجلة الاجتماعيّة تلك؟ الجواب هو أن حالة "الرقص" تلك هي مرحلة "الحداثة" في حين أن "الحنجلة" تشير إلى مرحلة "الداثة المبكرة". والمقاربة هنا بين المثل الشعبي والحالة التاريخيّة تهدف للإشارة إلى انتقال المجتمعات العربيّة تدريجيّاً من حالة قديمة إلى حالة حديثة، وان المراحل الأولى لهذا الانتقال، عندما بدأت الممارسات الاجتماعيّة بالخروج عن المألوف، هوما يمكن أن ينطبق عليها حالة "الحنجلة" على كافة المستويات الاجتماعية والاقتصاديةو السياسيّة والدينية والعمرانية. تساهم هذه الدراسة الجديدة في تقصي ملامح هذه "الحنجلة الاجتماعية" في مدينة دمشق تحديداً، من خلال قراءة جديدة لشريحة من الكتابات التاريخية التي عنيت بتفاصيل الحياة اليومية، كيوميات ابن كنان والبديري وميخائيل بريك، وغيرهم من كتّاب تلك الفترة.
