يضم الكتاب أحاديث وقصص دارت حول مشاهير التائبين من بدء الخليقة إلى عصر المؤلف. وهدف المؤلف من وراء ذلك التشويق إلى أخبار هؤلاء للترغيب في أحوالهم وثم الاقتداء بهم. وقد بدأ الكتاب بذكر توبة الملائكة، ثم الأنبياء علهيم السلام، ثم ملوك الأمم الخالية، ثم الأمم ثم الآحاد منهم، ثم أصحاب النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم ملوك هذه الأمة، ثم سائرهم.
وقد جاء الكتاب محققاً حيث عمل المحقق فيه على شرح الكثير من ألفاظه لتيسير سبيل الاستفادة منه للقارئ العادي مع الإشارة إلى محال وجود أحاديث دون تبيان درجتها من الصحة، ثم الترجمة لمعظم أعلامه وضبط الأشعار الواردة في سياق النص مع بيان بحورها، ووضع عناوين فرعية لقصص الكتاب، لتسهيل الوصول إلى الحاجة منها، مع مقدمة تضمنت ترجمة للمؤلف في سطور.
