نظراً لمناقب الملكين: الملك العادل نور الدين ومن بعده الملك الناصر صلاح الدين، ونظراً لمآثرها ولأخبارهما في العدل والجهاد، وسعيهما إلى إعزاز دين الله، فاجتهد المؤلف في ذكر فضلهما بإفراده هذا الكتاب لذكر دولتيهما النورية والصلاحية معتمداً في ذلك على من سبقه ممن صنفوا في أخبار هذين وأخصهم كتابي الإمام عماد الدين أبو حامد الأصفهاني، فانتقى من هذين الكتابين أهم ما ورد في ذكر الوقائع والحوادث من الغزوات والفتوحات وغيرهما، منتزعاً المقصود من الأخبار من هذين الكتابين، منتقياً منهما النكت الغريبة والفوائد اللطيفة والقصائد وما ورد من الرسائل الفاضيلية والأشعار الصحارية مما ذكره في ديوانه ملتقطاً منها مما يتعلق بالدولتين أو بأحديهما مضيفاً إلى ذلك ما جمعه من أفواه الرجال الثقاة، ومن المدركين لتلك الأوقات، فاختص جميع ما في ذلك من أخبار الدولتين.
