تستهل الشاعرة العراقية آمال الزهاوي ديوانها الشعري "نجمة سومرية" بمدخل هو بمثابة جواز سفر لعبور النص أو عبور الزمن الآفل. تقول الشاعرة " ... إن القصيدة الملحمية .. (نجمة سومرية( مرثاة وتصوير دقيق يومي لأيام الحرب وما تحمل من آلام السقوط والخيبة، أو الخوف والرعب اللذين تختلج بهما النفوس من خلال الطائرت العملاقة التي ترمي على الناس (العنقودي) وأنواع القنابل المحرمة (...)". ومن هذا المفتتح النصي تبدو القيمة الراهنية للنص؛ فالشاعرة تكتب عن عراق الأمس، وعراق اليوم، هذا الإشتغال الفني الفريد يترافق مع الإعتناء بالصورة عبر قوة المحمولات الدلالية الإيحائية التي تشكل بديلاً للواقع الحسي المعاشي. "سقطت بغداد مضرجة / سقطت حاضرة الدنيا / سقطت وتولتها الأنباء / انهارت على عجل / وأمام الناس جميعاً / الأهل أو الأعداء / من يمسك خوذتها العباسية / وملابسها اللامعة الألوان / ببريق يومض بالأحلام / وعليها أوشحةُ الحكمة ورداءْ / كيف هوت؟ كنا نتأملُ سيفاً في يدها / نحلم أن نخلق منها دولتنا الكبرى ..." بهذه الروح المحبة للوطن وأهله يمتلىء إِناء الشعر عند "شاعرة البنفسج ونخلة العراق" اللقب الذي رافق آمال الزهاوي حتى وفاتها.
توزعت قصائد الديوان على عشرين مقطعاً شعرياً في الشعر العربي الحديث، جمعت فيه الشاعرة قصائداً لم يجتمع مثلها في كتاب.
