تمتلك الدول الإسلامية العديد من المقومات الإقتصادية كالثروات الطبيعية والموارد البشرية الكبيرة التي تمكنها من تكوين هياكل إنتاجية ضخمة وسوقاً واسعة لتبادل منتجات العمل وتكون مراكز مالية عالمية للتمويل والإقتراض والإستثمار وأن يكون لها نصيب من التجارة الدولية إذ أنها تمتلك ما يعادل أكثر من خمس سكان العالم وجغرافياً تمتلك مساحات شاسعة تعادل سدس مساحة العالم تمتد فوق أربع قارات من ألبانيا في أوروبا شمالاً إلى موزمبيق في أفريقيا جنوباً، وغرباً من قيانا في أمريكا اللاتينية إلى أندونيسيا في آسيا شرقاً.
وتمتلك الدول الإسلامية حوالي 73 بالمائة من الإحتياطي العالمي من النفط وتنتج 38,5 بالمائة من الإنتاج العالمي كما تملك حوالي 40 بالمائة من الإحتياطي العالمي من الغاز الطبيعي والأمر الملاحظ في هذا المجال أن 90 بالمائة من صادرات هذه المواد تتم كمادة خام غير مصنّعة.
بالرغم من امتلاك الدول الإسلامية كل هذه المقومات إلا أن حجم صادراتها لا يزال متدنياً مقارنة ببعض الدول الأخرى. كما أن صادراتها تتركز غالباً في الصادرات السلعية وتحديداً المواد الأولية مثل المنتجات الزراعية والنفط الخام والمنتجات النفطية.
