تهدف البنوك الإسلامية إلى إحداث تغيير في العمل المصرفي من حيث الهياكل والتنظيم والأغراض عن طريق بلورة أحكام الشريعة الإسلامية في العمل المصرفي واقعياً، مع عدم إغفال الصالح العام، وذلك عن طريق تنمية الإقتصاد في الدول الإسلامية بواسطة جمع المدخرات، وتحديد الإنتفاع من التمويلات لأكبر عدد ممكن من الناس في كل المجتمعات الإسلامية، والعمل على تطوير التبادل التجاري في الدول الإسلامية، ودعم المشروعات التي لا تجد لها مكاناً في تمويلات البنوك التقليدية، وتساعد البنوك الإسلامية في جمع الزكاة وصرفها حسب مصارفها الشرعية، ولذلك يمكن وصف البنك الإسلامي بأنه: (مؤسسة مالية ومصرفية تزاول أعمالها وفق أحكام الشريعة الإسلامية).
تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التعرف على الأهداف والخدمات التي تقوم بها البنوك الإسلامية ودورها في مجال تمويل التجارة، وكذلك التعرف على ما تمتلكه الدول الإسلامية من إمكانات، وآلية توظيفها وإستغلالها في مجال التجارة، لما للتجارة من أهمية كبيرة في رفع مستوى الشعوب والمجتمعات، وتهدف الدراسة أيضاً إلى تتبع دور البنك الإسلامي للتنمية في التبادل التجاري للدول الإسلامية من خلال البرامج الخاصة بالتجارة، وكذلك بناء نموذج قياسي يوضح أثر التمويل المقدم من البنك الإسلامي للتنمية على التجارة الإجمالية والبينية للدول الإسلامية الأعضاء في البنك.
وقد تبين أن البنوك الإسلامية تساهم مساهمة إيجابية في التنمية الإقتصادية للدول الإسلامية، ويمكن أن تؤدي دوراً رائداً في مجال تمويل التجارة.
