لقد شهد العالم في الآونة الأخيرة إهتماماً متزايداً بالتجارة الإلكترونية Electronic Commerce كنتيجة حتمية وضرورية للتطورات والمستجدات الحديثة في مجال تكنولوجيا المعلومات والإتصالات حيث لعبت ولا زالت تلعب الشبكة الدولية للمعلومات أو ما يعرف بالإنترنيت دوراً رئيساً ومهماً كوسيط لإستكمال تنفيذ أعمال التجارة بشكلها الحديث والمعاصر.
فقد حصل تحولاً كبيراً من الشكل التقليدي للتجارة إلى الشكل الإلكتروني الحديث، وأصبحت التجارة الإلكترونية واقعاً ملموساً في ظل البيئة الحالية.
وتسعى العديد من الدول إلى تعظيم دور التجارة الإلكترونية خصوصاً في ظل المتغيرات العالمية والتحديات الجديدة ومن المتوقع أن يتعاظم دورها في المستقبل القريب نظراً لتأثير هذه التجارة على الأسواق وأداء المؤسسات وقدرتها المنافسية، حيث يتوقع أن تكون التجارة الإلكترونية هي أسلوب التجارة السائد بين المنظمات والأفراد خلال هذا القرن في كافة انحاء العالم.
في الوقت الذي نجد فيه الدول المتقدمة ومنها الولايات المتحدة والدول الأوروبية قد قطعت شوطاً كبيراً في مجال التجارة الإلكترونية، نرى من الجانب الآخر الدول العربية متاخرة في هذا المجال ولم تستطع إستيعاب فكرة وأهمية المعلومات إلا في الآونة الأخيرة.
لم تعر هذه الدول أي أهمية لصناعة المعلومات والتجارة الإلكترونية، مما جعل منظمات الأعمال والشركات تعاني من تخوف وقلق من إستدام التجارة الإلكترونية وفي ظل عدم وجود وعي كامل لدى الأفراد من حيث التعامل مع هذه الوسائل الحديثة فضلاً عن هذا فإن الإهتمام بمجال التجارة الإلكترونية يتطلب المزيد من التخطيط والتنظيم العلمي وبالطبع فإن تزايد التحديات يفتح المجال أمام العديد من الباحثين لمواصلة البحث حول هذا الموضوع الحيوي ومعرفة أبعاده ودراسته وتذليل الصعوبات والعمل على معالجتها.
