تدور أحداث هذه الرواية حول نذر الكونتيسة بأن تقدم لسكان المنطقة التي تأوي القصر المنيف الذي ورثته هي عن أجدادها عصيدة من العسل كل سنة، لكن من سيخلفونها في إدارة القصر يمتنعون عن تقديم العصيدة فتنجم عن هذا الإخلال بالنذر سلسلة صراعات مع العفاريت التي تحرس القصر. العفاريت الطَّيبين أو الأقزام كانوا يكنّون بالخصوص للكونت أوسموند ولزوجته الكونتيسة بيرت حبّاً جمّاً، وهم الذين من قبلُ عرفوا آباءَهُما وأجدادَهُما وأجدادَ أجدادِهما. يسرد لنا الكاتب الرواية بأسلوب آسر وحافل بالتشويق والغرائب والمفاجآت.
