"ليسامح الناس تلك المرأة التي ربما كانت عاجزة، منذ أعوام الشباب، عن أن تحمل على كتفيها الضعيفتين تلك المهمة الرفيعة - أن تكون زوجة رجل عبقري وإنسان عظيم".
هذا ما كتبته صوفيا أندرييفنا تولستايا في عام 1913 م عقب وفاة زوجها كاتب روسيا الكبير ليف تولستوي، بعد أن عاشت حوالي نصف قرن إلى جانبه، وشاطرته صعوبات الحياة في المجتمع القيصري المتزمت، وفي صعوده سلّم المجد حتى أصبح من أشهر كتاب روسيا في النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر ومطلع القرن العشرين.
إن اليوميات هي بمثابة رواية للأحداث اليومية التي تجسد خصال الكاتب وموقف زوجته من سلوكياته معها ومع الآخرين، وأفكاره الطليعية في ذلك الزمان، ومعاناتها بسبب هذا كله.
أنها تزوجت الكونت ليف تولستوي في عام 1862 م، وأصبحت تحمل لقب كونتيسة، حين كانت في سن 18 عاماً، بعد أن شبّت بلا هموم في كنف أبيها اندريه بيرس طبيب الأسرة القيصرية الذي عاش مع أسرته في شقة حكومية في داخل الكرملين.
واكتسبت صوفيا الكثير من العادات الأرستقراطية وحصلت على تعليم جيد من إجادة ثلاث لغات أجنبية، هي الفرنسية والإنجليزية والألمانية، والعزف على البيانو، ناهيك عن الإطلاع على الآداب العالمية.
واتسمت بطبيعة شاعرية وبمواهب عدة تركت أثرها في العلاقات مع زوجها لاحقاً، حيث أحبت صوفيا سحر الطبيعة في الريف الروسي، كما أحبت الموسيقى والفن عموماً، وخالفت زوجها في تقييمه للفنون الذي ورد في كتابه "حول الفن".
وكان تولستوي قد أصبح آنذاك كاتباً معروفاً ونافس حتى تورجينيف في الشهرة، وترجمت أعماله إلى اللغات الأجنبية، وقد شق طريقه في ميدان الأدب بعد تجارب حياتية قاسية منها الخدمة في الجيش والمشاركة في حرب القرم ومن ثم في القوقاز بصفة ضابط مدفعية، وعرف كل مساوئ حياة الضباط آنذاك من سكر وعربدة ومعاشرة الغجر وبنات الهوى ولعب القمار.
