الهولنديون هم شعب هولندا، إنهم يزرعون الكثير من الأزهار الجميلة، إن أزهارهم مشهورة في جميع أنحاء العالم، هذه القصة عن رجل حاول استنبات زهرة توليب سوداء، التوليب أزهار تنمو عالياً في خط مستقيم وكثير من ألوانها جميلة.
كورنيليوس فان بيرل شاب غني قضي وقته في زراعة أزهار التوليب، وقد استنبت الكثير من أزهار التوليب بألوان مختلفة أكثر مما زُرعت من قبل، أكثر ما رغب فيه هو إستنبات زهرة توليب بلون أسود، حيث عرضت جائزة كبيرة لأول رجل يستطيع استنبات زهرة توليب سوداء.
كان لكورنيليوس عدو يُدعى إسحاق بوكستل، وهو أيضاً مستنبت توليب وكان يخشى أن يحصل كورنيليوس على الجائزة قبله، لذلك ذهب إلى مكاتب حكومية قص فيها قصصاً ضد كورنيليوس، وأرسل كورنيليوس إلى السجن، كانت روزا ابنة سجان كورنيليوس، وقع كورنيليوس وروزا في الحب وساعدت روزا كورنيليوس في استنبات زهرة توليب سوداء.
ذات يوم مليء بالفخر وسعيد تمكنت روزا بإحضار زهرة توليب سوداء لتريها لكورنيليوس، لكن بعد وقت قصير شعرت روزا وكورنيليوس بالتعاسة - فقد سرق أحدهم زهرة التوليب السوداء! طبعاً كان السارق هو إسحاق بوكستل، الذي انطلق بأسرع ما أمكنه هذا إلى هارلم، حيث كانت ستعطى الجائزة هناك، لاحقته روزا بوكستل... لكنني لن أروي نهاية القصة.
الإخوان دي ويت اللذان ذكرا في القصة هما شخصان حقيقيان، وقد قتلا كما ذكر في القصة، أمير أورانج، الذي ذُكر كذلك في القصة، أصبح الملك وليم الثالث لبريطانيا.
كتب زهرة توليب السوداء كاتب فرنسي مشهور، يدعى ألكساندر دوماس (1803- 1870)، وقد كتب أيضاً الكونت دي مونت كريستو.
