كان طموح الإسلام منذ البداية صناعة أمة جديدة ذات ثقافة مختلفة تقطع مع تنويعات الثقافة الجاهلية التي تنتصر لممارسات الإستبداد والغلبة والثأر، وخيارات التجهيل والإفقار والتهميش .. من أجل تأسيس لثقافة تنحاز إلى قيم الشورى والحوار والعلم والعدالة والحرية والفضيلة.
لكن الإسلام لم ينجح في ذلك كثيراً من الناحية العملية، فلم يمضِ وقت طويل على غياب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى عادت إلى الواجهة ثقافة الإستبداد والتجهيل والإستعباد والتهميش لتحكم باسم الدين الجديد هذه المرة. إن المعارك التي اشتعلت بين المسلمين بمجرد غياب النبي، لم تكن صراعاً حول فرائض الدين وطقوسه، ولكنها كانت معارك حول قيم هذا الدين وثقافته. وهذه المعارك هي التي أسست ذلك الشرخ التاريخي الكبير في جسد الأمة الوليدة.
لذا، فإن كل ما حدث بعد وفاة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لا بد له أن يخضع، عند تقييمه، للموضوعية العلمية المنطلقة على أساس معطيات التاريخ باعتباره المقياس الذي لا غنى عنه لمعرفة حجم الإنقلاب الذي طرأ على سلوك المسلمين الأوائل بعيداً عن هالة القداسة المزيفة التي أضيفت عليهم، والتي استقر بسببها ذلك الخلط المستحكم بين إسلام الوحي والتاريخ الذي صنعه الطغاة وأدواتهم وكُتب باسم هذا الدين دون وجه حق.
هذا الكتاب يتناول بشكل خاص فترة الخلافة الأولى التي استمرت حتى استيلاء معاوية على الحكم، لكنه لا يهمل المرحلة التأسيسية التي نقل فيها الإسلام العرب من سلطة القبيلة إلى سلطة الدولة. وقد حاول المؤلف تفهّم طرائق التفكير لدى أهل ذلك الزمان والقيم التي كانوا يلتزمون بها والدوافع التي كانت تحركهم، وجعل النصوص تتكلم أولاً من أجل أن تكون الإستنتاجات منطقية وغير مسقطة. وإذا كان الكتاب يتضمن أحياناً إنتقادات، فذلك بسبب الموضوعية العلمية التي ترفض المحاباة على حساب الحقيقة التاريخية.
