هذا الكتاب عبارة عن دراسة علمية منهجية جديدة عن الإسلام والخلافة، يقدمها المؤلف الدكتور على حسنى الخربوطلى وذلك لأن الخلافة دائمًا هى محور التاريخ الإسلامي على مر العصور وشغلت الكثير من العقول والأقلام. ويتحدث المؤلف في هذا الكتاب عن فجر الخلافة وما دار فيها من أحداث في عهد أبي بكر وعمر وعثمان وعلي، ويوضح لنا تشكيل حكومة الخلافة الراشدة وتشكيل القضاء ثم ينتقل للحديث عن الخلافة الأموية بدمشق، بداية من قيامها ومرورًا بمميزاتها ومعاول الهدم وصولًا إلى أسباب السقوط ويفصل الحديث في حكومة الخلافة الأموية وطريقة عمل الديوان ودور كبار الموظفين والقضاء والحسبة والشرطة، وغير ذلك من المحاور، لينتقل بعد ذلك لتفصيل الحديث عن الخلافة العباسية في بغداد والخلافة الفاطمية وتطور الدعوة الشيعية في البلاد، وكذلك يتناول بالتحليل كيفية إحياء الخلافة العباسية في القاهرة، ثم كيف انهارت، ويختتم الكتاب بالحديث عن الخلافة العثمانية في القسطنطينية.
