يهدف الكتاب إلى فتح آفاق جديدة في تلقي النص السردي، ومساءلة المبدع عن الأساليب البنائية للرواية والقصة القصيرة، وذلك بتطبيق أبرز آليات قراءة النص السردي المستمدة من نظرية التلقي والمناهج النقدية المعاصرة، إذ إن القراءة المنهجية تُفضي إلى الكشف عن جماليات السرد التي لا تتجلى في القراءة العفوية التي لا تستند إلى معايير ورؤى نقدية.
كما أن القراءة المنهجية تكفل مساءلة المؤلف أو الكاتب عن التقنيات الفنية والأسلوبية والبنائية من قبل المتلقي الذي يُصبح منتجاً ومشاركاً في النص السردي، ولا يعني ما تقدم أن موضوعات الكتاب ومنهجيته مقصورة على إفادة المتلقي، بل إن المبدع (الروائي أو الكاتب) ينبغي أن يعي المواصفات الموضوعية التي تقتضيها القراءة المنهجية كي يكون إنتاجه السردي متناغماً مع مقتضيات التلقي.
ومن أبرز العتبات النصية في الخطاب السردي تحقق التعالق بين العنوان والغلاف والمضمون على إعتبار أنها تشكل مثلث الإبداع (العنوان / الغلاف / المضمون)، وأي خلل في التواصل بين العناصر الثلاثة يؤدي إلى فجوة بين المتلقي والنص، وإلى تقصير المبدع في تشكيل النص السردي.
