حصل على عدةجوائز, منها جائزة ميجيل دي ثيربانتس عام 1984

يقول أرنستو ساباتو عن هذا الكتاب بأنه يوميات بل مجموعة شكوك لكاتب من أمريكا اللاتينية يملك عذاباته الخاصة.
وفي (الكاتب وكوابيسه) يوضح ساباتو الأسباب التي دفعته إلى إختيار العلوم البحتة وهي البحث في النهج الرياضي المثالي (الأفلاطوني) عن النظام الذي لم يعثر عليه في داخله، وكذلك تلك الفترة من حياته فترة الإيمان الوضعي بالعلم، إلاّ أن هذا الإيمان لم يبق طويلاً، فالعقلانية الجافة التي تقود كل شي إلى أحوال الإعتماد القائمة على قانون السببية، إلى القالب والصيغة الميتة، قد أفزعت ساباتو.
ومعلوم أن علم النفس قد أثبت ما كان موضع ريبة كتّاب كبار وهو إن الكوابيس لا تتربص بنا عن قرب بل هي، ولربما أخطرها، في دواخلنا.
وتبدأ مغامرة ساباتو الفكرية وحماسه في البدء ثم شكوكه كإنعكاس حسّاس لتجارب عموم البشر، كما يجد أن الإنسان المتلهف إلى السلطة أو الإستحواذ ينطلق صوب غزو العالم وبذلك يسقط روحياً، وهنا يعود ساباتو إلى ما قيل قديماً: يكسف الإنسان العالم لكن يخسر نفسه، وكما يقول فإن العقل والمال (الحقيقة التي صُيِّرت عادية وضُغطت في القالب الإقتصادي) هما تلك القوة اللاأخلاقية التي تغّذي المعاصرة مما يذكّرنا بقول كارل يونغ: العقلانية والمبتذل banal هما في الجوهر عاقبة الحاجة المتضخمة إلى الدوافع والتي يتميز بها سكان المدن.
ومن ناحية أخرى فالقرن العشرون فصلُ نهائياً بين الحرية والتقدم وزاد من مرارة القول المشهور لنيتشه في أن التقدم قد يكون تقهقرياً والتقهقر تقدمياً...
ويرى ساباتو أن الشك المُبرَّر بالحرية، بصيغتها الغريبة، دفع وحتى إلى التشكيك بالحرية نفسها، وعلى الأقل أُجلِّت مسألة تحقيقها إلى أمد غير معروف، كذلك فالحرية لا تهبط من السماء بل ينبغي أن تُشيَّد من الصغائر اليومية وحتى المضحكة وغير السليمة منها، والتي بفضلها لا يضيع الإنسان في الجميع.
وأكيد أن ساباتو لا يريد بناء طوبائية جديدة، فصوت هذا الكتاب الكبير ليس إلاّ نداءاً إنسانياً عاجزاً...
