لا شك أن البلاغة العربية قد تصدت لدراسة الخصائص التي تميز اللغة الأدبية عن غيرها، واستطاع البلاغيون أن يرصدوا كثيراً من الأفكار التي يمكن عدُّها تأسيساً لنظرية جمالية لا يمكن للدارس إغفالها، ولكن الدراسات البلاغية القديمة - بقدر ما هي واسعة وثرية - بحاجة إلى توظيف مباحثها في الإفادة والإستفادة من الإتجاهات التي تمخضت عنها الدراسات اللغوية والنقدية الحديثة، ولذلك اتخذت هذه الدراسة من التراث البلاغي مجالاً، ومن البحث في أصول الوظيفة الجمالية لهذا التراث موضوعاً.
وهكذا اتجهنا صوب التراث البلاغي محاولين إبراز الملامح الجمالية عند البلاغيين ونتتبع خصائص اللغة الفنية لإستجلاء المعالم التي تقف شاهدة على المنحى الجمالي لهذا التراث، وأهم المقومات الجمالية التي أسفر عنها، وشكلت تصور البلاغيين العرب لأدبية اللغة، وميزت تناولهم لجمالية الأسلوب.
على أن الغاية التي توخيناها لا تقف عند حد البرهنة على المنحى الجمالي للبلاغة ومفاهيمها وعلومها، بل تتعدى ذلك إلى محاولة لملمة جزئيات هذه البلاغة ومصطلحاتها - وهي كثيرة - بإبراز الكليات والأصول التي تندرج ضمنها هذه الجزئيات وتدور في فلكها.
