كان هذا العلم في أول نشأته إسلامياً محضاً، لم يخرج عما ألفه السملمون من قواعد، وما تواضعوا عليه من مصطلحات، وهم الذين سموه "علم البلاغة"، ومع توالي الزمن، وتراكم نظريات العلوم المكتشفة والمستنبطة فرعوه إلى فروع، فهذا علم سموه "علم البيان"، يبحث في الصورة وعناصرها، وهذا علم سموه "علم المعاني"، يدور حول الكلمة المفردة، والجملة المركبة، ووحدات الحروف التي تتألف منها اللفظة المفردة في مدودها، وشداتها، ونوع حروفها، وشكل موسيقاها، وجمالها، وهذا علم سموه "علم البديع"، ويدور حول الجمال الفني الذي يساعد على حسن الصورة والقول الجميل.
