قد يختلف الباحثون حول البلاغة القديمة وتاريخها ومنهجها، ولكنهم يجمعون على تأكيد الطابع الجمالي لهذه البلاغة، وأن أول معاني كلمة البلاغة نفسها هو جمال الكلام، ثم تعقبه معان آخر كالإقناع، والتأثير.
غير أنا يمكن أن نجمل هدف البلاغة القديمة في التأثير، وهذا التأثير نوعان: تأثير جمالي وجداني، يستهدف الإثارة الجمالية، وتأثير إقناعي طابعه عقلي وغايته الإقناع، وإن لم يكن الفصل بين هذين النوعين من التأثير ممكناً في جميع الأحوال؛ إذ لا يخلو الكلام المقنع الساطع الحجة من جمال ما، كما اننا لا نستطيع أن نفصل بدقة بين الأدوات البلاغية، ذات الهدف الإقناعي، وبين الأدوات الجمالية الخالصة.
ويؤكد الباحثون الطابع الجمالي للبلاغة القديمة من خلال ما لاحظوه من أنها "كانت تقابل علم القواعد الذي كان يعرض على أنه طريقة ضمان الإستعمال الصحيح للغة من أجل غاية إتصالية، أما البلاغة فكانت تمثل الصفة الجمالية للخطاب، معتمدة على مجموعة من أدوات التحسين، حتى تتجنب السأم أو اللامبالاة عند مستقبل الخطاب.
