السيميائية (أو السيميولوجيا) هي علم العلامات أو السيرورات التأويلية. توجد إذن، كما ذكر بذلك أمبرتو أيكو (1988) روابط عميقة بين العلامات والتأويل، وذلك لأن " شيئاً ما لايكون علامة إلا لأنه يؤول بوصفه علامة لشيء ما بوساطة مؤؤل ما" (موريس 1983). ومع ذلك، فإن السيميائية المعاصرة، في الواقع، قد تطورت عموماً بشكل مستقل عن التأويل. فلقد أرادت جوهرياً لنفسها أن تكون نظرية وعلماً يصنف العلامات، وتحليلاً للشرع (codes)، وقواعد، وأنساقاً، ومواضعات، إلى آخره، ولم تشأ أن تكون نظرية للتأويل. وليس سوى في وقت قريب قد انزاح النبر نحو قضايا التأويل، وبشكل عام أكثر نحو ذرائعية للعلامات (إيكو 1985). ومع ذلك، فعلى مقدار ما يكون هذا الانزياح في النبر مشتركاً بين معظم الأنظمة الما بعد بنيوية، وحيث كانت السيميائية المعاصرة كنسية جداً، وحساسة تجاه المؤثرات النظرية الخارجية، فإنه لمن الصعب حالياً تثمين النتائج على المدى الطويل. والسيميائية التي سنتخذها موضوعاً هنا هي نظرية العلامات بشكل أساسي.
