السيميائيات علم يدرس أنساق العلامات: لغات، أنماط، علامات المرور، إلى آخره. وهذا التعريف يجعل اللغة جزءاً من السيميائية. وهناك اتفاق عام، في الواقع، لإعطاء اللغة مكانة مرموقة ومستقلّة تسمح بتعريف السيميائيات على أنها: "دراسة الأنساق السيميائية غير اللغوية"، وسنتبنى هذا التعريف هنا.
إنّ السيميائيات كما صممها سوسير عبارة عن "علم يدرس حياة العلامات في قلب الحياة الاجتماعية". والنص الذي يُتلى دائماً هو: "اللغة نسق من العلامات المعبرة عن أفكار، وهي لهذا تُقارن بالكتابة، وبحروف البُكم. الصم، وبالطقوس الرمزية، وبعبارة الآداب العامة، وبالعلامات العسكرية، إلى آخره. إنّها فقط ذات أهمية أكبر من كل هذه الأنساق.
ويمكننا، إذن، أن نقيم علماً يدرس حياة العلامات داخل الحياة الاجتماعية. ويشكل هذا العلم جزءاً من علم النفس العام. ونحن نسمّيه (السيميائيات)، وهي تسمية آتية من (اليونانية Selmon. علامة) وهي تُخبرنا عن تكوّن العلامات، وعن القوانين التي تسبرها. وبما أنّها لا تزال غير موجودة، فإننا لا نستطيع أن نتكهن بما ستكونه. غير أنّها تملك الحق في الوجود. ومكانها مقرر بشكل مسبق. وليست اللسانيات سوى جزء من هذا العلم العام. وستكون القوانين التي ستكشفها السيميائيات قابلة للتطبيق على اللسانيات، كما ستجد هذه نفسها مرتبطة بميدان محدد ضمن مجموع الوقائع الإنسانية.
