الأسلوبية علم يدرس اللغة ضمن نظام الخطاب، ولكنها أيضاً علم يدرس الخطاب موزعاً على مبدأ هوية الاجناس، لذا كان موضوع هذا العلم متعدد المستويات، مختلف المشارب والإهتمامات، متنوع الأهداف والإتجاهات. وما دامت اللغة ليست حكراً على ميدان إيصالي دون آخر، فإن موضوع علم الأسلوبية ليس حكراً على ميدان تعبير دون آخر. ولكن يبقى صحيحاً أن الأسلوبية علم يرقى بموضوعه، أو هو يعلو عليه لكي يحيله إلى درس علمي. ولولا ذلك لما حازت الأسلوبية على هذه الصفة ولما تعددت مدارسها ومذاهبها. كما يبقى صحيحاً أن الأسلوبية هي صلة اللسانيات بالأدب ونقده. وبها تنتقل من دراسة الجملة – لغة – إلى دراسة اللغة نصاً فخطاباً فأجناساً، ولذا كانت الأسلوبية جسر اللسانيات إلى تاريخ الأدب كما عبر سبيتزر عن ذلك.
