قبل أن نستعرض خصائص سيمياء براغ للمسرح والأسس النظرية التي قامت عليها، لا بد أن نلقي بعض الضوء على طبيعة السيمياء الحديثة، التي استكملت تطورها منذ بداية القرن العشرين في مجال الألسنية البنيوية عند سوسور (1857-1913)، وفي ميدان المنطق والفلسفة عند بيرس (1857-1914). السيمياء، كعلم، تعنى بدراسة الظواهر الاشارية، من حيث طبيعتها، وخواصها، وانساقها، وأشكالها. ومنذ الخمسينات صار المنهج السيميائي سائداً في ميادين علم النفس، وعلم الاجتماعن والانثروبولوجيا، والميثولوجيا،والفن، والأدب، والمسرح، الأمر الذي أدى الى انتشار مزيج غير متجانس من المصطلحات المتسمة بالغموض والتجريد. وانفتاح النقد الأدبي والمسرحي والذي ظل لقرون عديدة أسير مصطلحات خاصة به، على الالسنية والسيمياء لقح لغته بمصطلحات تستدعي أحياناً استخدام معاجم اختصاصية مختلفة لفك رموزها. وهذا أثار بعض النقمة على سيميائي النقد الأدبي والمسرحي، لا سيما في الولايات المتحدة. لذلك تستهدف هذه المقدمة، قدر الامكان، استجلاء الغموض الذي تعرضت له المفاهيم العامة للسيمياء، تمهيداً لدراسة سيمياء براغ للمسرح .
