تطرح أملي نصر الله مسائل الحرية والتبعية طرحاً عينياً عبر تصويرها لشخصيات أبطالها. ولئن كانت التبعية تتمثل في تشرّب المفاهيم المسبقة التي يستمدها المرء من العائلة والمجتمع، فإن الحرية، بما هي صناعة للذات، تكمن في السعي الحثيث للتحرر من هذه المفاهيم التي تناقض منطق الحياة فكأن الشخصية الروائية، عند نصر الله، تتوزع بين جواذب الماضي وإغراءات المستقبل ولذلك تعاني صراعاً مأساوياً مدمراً. على أن هذه الشخصية تشعر أحياناً كثيرة بطغيان المفاهيم المسبقة حتى أنها تقولب سلوكها وتحدد ملامحها سلفاً على نحو ما نجد، في الفلسفة الوجودية، من صراع حاد بين الوجود والماهية. والوجود عند أملي، يتمثل في تفتيح شرنقة العادات والتقاليد وفكّ الارتباط بالحبل السرّي الذي يربط البطل برحم العائلة والمجتمع. أما الماهية، عندها، فتتجسّد في التبعية والارتهان لتصورات لم تخلقها الذات لذلك ترزح تحت وطأتها فتشل إمكاناتها، حتى ليجوز القول إن ثمة وعياً مضاداً يقبع داخل وعي الشخصية فلا يسعها العمل واتخاذ القرارات الصعبة. وفي هذه الدراسة الموجزة قراءة نفسية في بعض مؤلفات "أملي نصر الله" الأدبية، كما فيها تصدي لملامح النكوص إلى الوراء ومحاولات الانفتاح من زاوية تحليلية نفسية مبسطة.
