والسبب الذي يمكن وراء اختيار سنة 1789م بداية للموضوع لكونها تعتبر من وجهة نظر كثير من المؤرخين نقطة تحول مهمة في تاريخ أوروبا والعالم. ففي تلك السنة قامت الثورة الفرنسية التي أدت إلى تحولات جذرية في فرنسا وامتدت تأثيراتها إلى أماكن عديدة داخل القارة الأوروبية وخارجها، ورافق ذلك سلسلة من الحروب الطويلة والتغيرات السياسية والاجتماعية في أوروبا والعالم على مدى القرن التاسع عشر.
أما السبب الذي يعود إلى اختيار القرن العشرين نهاية للموضوع لأنه شهد حربين عالميتين، وبعد الحرب العالمية الثانية ظهر المعسكر الاشتراكي بزعامة الاتحاد السوفيتي والمعسكر الرأسمالي بزعامة الولايات المتحدة وقد نتج عن ذلك قيام الحرب الباردة بين العسكرين استمرت طوال فترة تقارب النصف قرن وشهد خلالها العالم الكثير من التطورات السياسية والعسكرية.
