الفهم الأشمل والأعمق لتطور الفكر الإقتصادي يستدعي تسليط الضوء على تطوُّر العلم بكليته، ولما كان هذا التطور قد طاول الفلسفة العلم أيضاً، بدا من الأنسب أن يقدم لهذا العمل من خلال إبراز أهمية العقلانية، وما تأسَّس عليها من تقليد علمي.
دون شك، من ضمن المهام الأساسية للعقل البشري جعل الكون الذي يوجد فيه الإنسان مفهوماً لبنيه.
وعملية الفهم هذه هي المهمة التي أنُيطت بالعلم، إنما، في محاولة فهم الكون، هذا، برز هناك توجهان متباينان، كلاهما على قدر كبير من الأهمية:
التوجه الأول طغى عليه سرد الأسطورة ونسج الأقصوصة والإنفعالات الشاعرية، وعن طريق كل ذلك تمت محاولة تفسير العالم وفهم ظواهره.
وكل الشعوب والجماعات البشرية كانت لها، عبر التاريخ، أقاصيصها وأساطيرها التفسيرية، الملهبة للخيال والمتمايزة بجمالية الحبك والسرد.
أما التوجه الثاني فيتمثل بالعقلانية حديثة التجذُّر، نسبياً، في الزمن والتي يمكن رد بداياتها إلى العصر الإغريقي، حيث تم إبتداع "النقد" (Critique) والمناقشة النقدية لمختلف الأساطير، بهدف صياغتها من جديد، لكي تخدم، على وجه أفضل، المشروع الفكري المطروح.
هذه العقلانية أسست لما يمكن أن يُسمى بالتقليد العلمي.
