عندما صِيغَ مصطلح "الجيوبوليتيك" عُنيَ به، في الأساس، البيئة الطبيعيّة للدولة.
لقد كان للدولة تلك هدف نهائي يتمثل بالوصول إلى القوة، في ظلّ حدود جيدة خارجياً، ووحدة متناسقة داخلياً، الجيوبوليتيك، هذا، تطوّر تباعاً، بحيث أصبح يدلِّل معناه الأوسع على تلك الأفعال المترابطة والمناورات المختلفة الهادفة جميعها إلى تحقيق النصر.
في جيوبوليتيك ما بين الحربين لعبت العوائق والمحدِّدات الطبيعية الدور الأهم في تحديد هوامش المناورات السياسية، وأُهملت، بالتوازي، تصوّرات ومخطّطات وتحرّكات اللاعبين ضمن منتدى الدول.
هذا النموذج، سالف الذكر، لم يتوقّف عن التطوّر، وعاد، لتؤخَذ بالحسبان، في إطاره، إهتماماتُ كُثرٍ، من المعنيّين بما يجري على الساحة الدولية، من رجالات دولة إلى دبلوماسيين وقادة جيوش وأكاديميّين ومنظمات غير حكومية إلخ...
في السياق آنف الذكر، يُطرَحُ تساؤلٌ وجيهٌ مفاده: هل أنّ الكليات والأكاديميّات الحربية عادت لتتقاطع وتتداخل مناهجها مع كلّ ما هو أكاديمي، إنما من طبيعةٍ غير عسكرية؟ بتعبير آخر، بعد أن انفتحت ميادين العلوم على بعضها البعض، وتعددت الإهتمامات، هل تماهت من جديد، جيوبوليتيكيات العسكريين والسياسيّين والأكاديميين؟ وإذا ما كانت الإجابة بالنفي، فهل ستكون تلك الجيوبوليتيكيات في طور التماهي خلال المرحلة القادمة؟.
