لم يتسع المجلدان (35- 36) من قصة الحضارة - على إمتدادهما - لقامة فولتير المديدة، لأنه لم يكن يعيش فيهما وحده، بل عايشه وناقشه فيهما فلاسفة وأساقفة، وأمراء ونبلاء.
لهذا، لم يكن بدٌّ من ملء مجلدين آخرين بعصره الزاخر بالصراع الخصب والصاخب والناشب بين أطراف الخلاف من يسوعيين وجانسنيين، يحتمون بقلعة المسيحية، وفلاسفة ومفكرين، جعلوا همهم الأوّل الكرَّ المستمرّ على أسوار هذه القلعة، فنقبوها في أكثر من ركن، وصدعوها في أكثر من جدار، حتى كادت تهوي قبل ان يهوي الباستيل.
وإذا كان القارئ يعرف قبل أن يقرأ هذا الكتيّب مَن الظافر ومَن الخاسر، فإنه بعد القراءة سيجد أن مواكبة الصراع أحبّ إليه من أن يشهد أقواس النصر تتوج رؤوس المنتصرين، ولسوف يمتعه أن يعاشر الأدباء والعلماء، فيرى المباضع تغوص في الأجساد، والمراصد تلاحق الكواكب، وديدرو يصنع الموسوعة، وفولتير يحاول أن ينزع من أوربا محاكم التفتيش ليصنع لها ضميراً تحتكم إليه، فيدينها قبل أن تدين الناس.
