الروحانية هي ذلك الجزء من علم اللاهوت الذي يتناول الكمال الإنجيلي والطرق التي تؤدي إليه، يعلمنا اللاهوت العقيدي ما يجب أن نؤمن به، فيما يعلمنا اللاهوت الأدبي (الأخلاقي) عما يجب فعله أو تجنبه؛ تحاشياً للخطيئة المميتة، أو لتلك التي يمكن الصفح عنها، وفوق هذا كله- ولو أنه يستند عليها- تأتي الروحانية، أو اللاهوت الروحي، وهذا، أيضاً، ينقسم إلى قسمين هما: لاهوت نسكي، ولاهوت صوفي، يتناول القسم الأول التدريبات المتطلبة من الطامحين إلى الكمال. والأمر المألوف هو أن الروح تصل إلى درجة الكمال من خلال اجتياز مراحل ثلاث، وهنا أردت فقط تلخيص الروحانية النسكية والصوفة الولى منذ أيام ولادتها وحتى بداية القرن العاشر. ثم إن إثراء الآثار المسيحية لا يتيح إطلاقاً أي محاولات للكتابة عنه بشكل مفصل وما كان غرضي سوى التعريف بالكتاب الأوائل، وتقديم تعليمهم بنفس كلماتهم وبشكل كاف لتقديم فكرة محددة عنه، ولكي أجمع معاً وأقدم وصفاً للعقائد النسكية والصوفية التي كانت سائدة في كل فترة من الفترات التي عرضناها، وباتباع الترتيب الزمني، جمعت بين التعليم الروحي للعهد الجديد، ومجموعة القواعد الإلهية النسكية للآباء الرسوليين، ثم تلك الخاصة برهبان القرنين الرابع والخامس، وبعد ذلك تأتي المجادلات البيلاجية، والتي كان لها تأثير على النسك، كما كان لها الفضل- إلى حد ما- في الروحانية الجديرة بالإعجاب للقديس أوغسطينوس.
