يدرس هذا الكتاب /ربما/ أهم مرحلة في تاريخ أوروبا، وذلك لأنها أشرت للتاريخ اللاحق الذي امتد في كل اتجاهات المعمورة. وفي كل جزء من أجزائه الأربعة (الألفية الأولى، مرحلة الصليبية، تمزق الكنسية، زمن المسيحيين الفاترين)، يبحث في واقع مرحلة معينة وجود المسيحية ودورها في الحياة سياسياً واجتماعياً وروحياً، بل ومكانتها إزاء السلطة المدنية.
في هذا الجزء الذي يتناول الألفية الأولى يدرس انتشار المسيحية وخروجها من السراديب السرية وصراعها مع الوثنية التي كانت تقود الإمبراطورية الرومانية وكيف تم لها (للمسيحية) السيطرة وصارت دين الدولة.
تكشف هذه الدراسة أموراً كثيرة ومهمة: ظهور المجامع المسكونية التي راحت تتوالى مصيغة العقائد المسيحية. تكشف عما برز من انشقاقات في داخل الكنيسة وما تبع ذلك من صراعات هائلة تداخل فيها السياسي والديني، ثم كيف انقسمت الإمبراطورية الرومانية وكيف صارت الكنيسة كنيستان: كنيسة شرقية، وكنيسة غربية، وفي فصل خاص يتحدث عن ظهور الإسلام ودخوله مسرح الأحداث الدولية التي راحت تزداد تعقداً.
