كتب ريتسوس هذه اليوميّات في ظلِّ أقسى الظروف، وعلى كلِّ ما يمكن أن يقع بين يديه من قصاصات الأوراق، بما في ذلك أوراق علب السجائر، وكانت تُخبَّأ أو تُدفن في القناتي الزجاجيَّة تحت الأرض.
وذلك في معسكر إعتقال السجناءِ السياسيين، في قرية "كونتوبولي" بجزيرة "ليمنوس" حيث نفي إليها معتقلاً أثر إنقلاب 1948 في اليونان، وجزيرة "ماكرونيسوس" المعزولة التي نقل إليها عام 1949.
كانت "كونتوبولي" مركزَ إحتجاز مؤقتاً لعددٍ قليل من المعتقلين، ومن مِهنٍ مختلفة من الرعاة إلى أساتذة الجامعات، أما "ماكرونيسوس" فكانت معسكر ضخماً، استوعب أكثر من 20.000 شخصاً بين رجل، وامرأة، وحتى أطفالاً.
ولم يكن مركز مجرد مركز إعتقال، إنما هو وسيلة لإعادة التأهيل يهدف تحويل المعتقلين السياسيين اليساريين إلى "مواطنين مخلصين" وإجبارهم على توقيع "إعلان التوبة" الذي يشير إليه ريتسوس أكثر من مرة.
وفي "ماكرونيسوس" أُعدِمَ عددٌ من المعتقلين وتعرَّضوا للتعذيب ودُفِعوا للجنون.
