أراد سبينوزا تلقين مذهب ديكارت لطالب يُدعى كازياريوس، فألّف كتاب مبادئ فلسفة ديكارت وأملاه عليه وشرحه شرحاً مفصّلاً، ربّما إعداداً له لفهم مذهب الإيتيقا...
وبعد ذلك استجاب لطلب لودفيغ ماير وألّف في ظرف أسبوعين التذييل المعَنْوَن Cogitata Metaphysica: أي الأفكار الميتافيزيقية...
تمّ نشر كتابيّ مبادئ فلسفة ديكارت وأفكار ميتافيزيقية عام 1663، وفي السنة الموالية قام بيار بالينغ، أحد الأصدقاء المقرّبين من سبينوزا، بنقلهما إلى اللغة الهولندية، فذاع صيت الفيلسوف في هولندا وخارجها، سيّما أنّهما الكتابان الوحيدان اللذان كانا يحملان اسمه قبل مماته.
وأما مراسلات سبينوزا فقد تفيد كثيراً في تسليط الأضواء على التقاط الغامضة في مذهبه، وفي التعرّف على شخصه وطبعه، وعلاقته بأصدقائه، والمنزلة التي يحتلّها بين علماء عصره، ونظرة الآخرين إليه: نظرة تشكّك وتظنّن تارة، ونظرة سخط ونقمة طوراً، ونظرة تبجيل وتقدير في غالب الأطوار.
كانت طريقة المراسلة فناً أدبياً بأتمّ معنى الكلمة، وكانت الرسائل التي يحرّرها كبار المفكرين تشكّل جزءاً من أعمالهم الفكرية الموصودة للنّشر آجلاً أو عاجلاً، كما كانت تسمح للفيلسوف الحذر بأن يعبّر عن آرائه التي لا يجهر بها في كتاباته المنشورة.
