شهد الأسبوع الأول من شهر جمادي الأول من عام 1415هـ الموافق الأسبوع الثاني من شهر تشرين الأول/أكتوبر من عام 1194م، انعقاد "المؤتمر القومي-الإسلامي" الأول في بيروت بلبنان، بمشاركة مئة وثلاثة من أصل الفكر والمؤسسات والحركات الأكثر فعلاً في ساحة العمل القومي-الإسلامي، جاؤوا من مختلف قطاعات الأمة بتياراتها الفكرية ودياناتها ومذاهبها المتعددة وخصوصياتها اللغوية والثقافية.
وكان لهذا الانعقاد صداه الواسع في أرجاء الوطن العربي وبعض أنحاء العالم الإسلامي فتح هذا المؤتمر الباب على مصراعيه لتفاعل نشط بين التيارين القومي والإسلامي ومع مختلف التيارات السياسية في الوطن العربي. ومهد الطريق لتحقيق تعاون مثمر بين أبناء الأمة للعمل معاً من أجل إقامة المشروع الحضاري العربي بأهدافه كلها. وكانت فكرة المؤتمر قد تبلورت في ندوة الحوار القومي-الديني التي نظمها مركز دراسات الوحدة العربية بالقاهرة 1989 بمشاركة عدد من المفكّرين المرموقين من التيارين، وتبنتها أمانة المؤتمر القومي العربي التي شكلت لجنة تحضيرية لتنفيذ الفكرة، تابعت جهودها على مدى ثلاثين شهراً من التحضير.
ويضم هذا الكتاب أعمال هذا المؤتمر. وقد تم ترتيب محتوياته بصورة تعطي فكرة واضحة على سير أعماله. وتشتمل هذه المحتويات الكلمات المكتوبة التي تلقتها اللجنة التحضيرية من بعض الأعضاء، وكلمات الأعضاء في الجلسات. كما تشمل كلمات أرسلها مدعوون تعذر عليهم حضور المؤتمر. وقد تم ترتيب محتويات الكتاب وفقاً لبرنامج المؤتمر في أيامه الثلاثة، ولجلساته في كل يوم، ولتسلسل الكلمات في كل جلسة. وقد جرى وضع الكلمات في كل جلسة وقد جرى وضع الكلمات المكتوبة التي أرسلها الأعضاء إلى المؤتمر مع كلماتهم فيه.
