يعد هذا البحث من المباحث ذات الصلة بالدراسات العقدية والفكرية الإسلامية التي تهتم بالفكر الحداثي العربي المعاصر؛ وهو الفكر الذي نشط، ومنذ مرحلة ما بت يعرف بالصدمة الحضارية التي أعقبت حملة نابليون على مصر، في البحث في سؤال النهضة؛ والمقصود به: كيف يمكن النهوض بالمجتمعات العربية بعد أن تكشف له حجم الهوة التي تفصل بينها (أي المجتمعات العربية) وبين أوروبا؛ حيث وقف في معظمه على التجربة الأوروبية في قراءة التراث المسيحي الأوروبي والدور الذي لعبته حركات الإصلاح الديني في تقدم المجتمعات الأوروبية وتمكُّنِها من وسائله.
لقد رأى الفكر الحداثي العربي المعاصر، في معظمه، أن التراث الإسلامي هو تراث يحوي بذور التخلف والإنحطاط في نفسه، وأنه تراث تقليدي يخضع لتفسيرات لاهوتية يأباها العقل الحديث وترفضها القراءات المعاصرة التي فرضتها حالة التقدم الأوروبية.
وكان التراث، بذلك في نظرهم، أحد أهم أسباب التخلف التي تعانيها المجتمعات العربية والإسلامية، ومن ثمة ذهب إلى ضرورة إعادة قراءته بهدف تجديده على النحو الذي قرأت به أوروبا تراثها المسيحي واليهودي أيضاً حتى تتمكن من إحداث النهوض والتقدم.
