اهتمت النظريات الأدبية، قديمًا وحديثًا، باستجابة الجمهور للأدب، ولكن طبيعة النظرة إلى هذه الاستجابة اختلفت من مدرسة إلى أخرى، ومن حقبة إلى الأخرى، ففي الوقت الذي تركز فيه الاهتمام عند أرسطو بالأثر الذي يحدثه عمل أدبي على مستقبله، انحصر الأمر على وسائل وتقنيات إحداث هذا الأثر، وليس على كيفية استقبال القراء والجمهور له. لقد تعاملت النظريات الكلاسيكية مع اللغة بوصفها شكلاً من أشكال القوة التي تؤثر في العالم، أكثر من كونها سلسلة من العلامات التي يمكن حل شفراتها؛ فعندما يتحدث أرسطو عن الشفقة والخوف بوصفهما عواطف أصيلة في التراجيديا، فإنه يرى أن ما يُميز الإنتاج الشعري هو التأثير المركز، فما يهمه هو درجة التأثير وليس طبيعته.
تمثل أعمال عبد الحكيم قاسم مجالاً تطبيقيًّا غنيًّا لدراسة المروى عليه، حيث تطرح تساؤلات نقدية حول حدود وظيفة الراوي، ومدى الحرية المتاحة له داخل الفضاء السردي؛ إذ يتشابك في روايات عبد الحكيم قاسم أحيانًا صوت الراوي وصوت بطله والصوت الخاص بالكاتب بطريقة تقترب في بعض الروايات من السيرة الذاتية، مما يجعل من سؤال: من يحكي الرواية سؤالاً مشروعًا، ويظل واحدًا من الأسئلة التي يصعب الاستقرار على إجابة قاطعة عنها.
