وُلِد أبو حنيفة النعمان بن ثابت الكوفي بالكوفة سنة ثمانين من الهجرة على القول الراجح 699م وكانت الكوفة تاريخئذ كعبة للعلم والعلماء والفلسفة والفلاسفة والنحو والنحاة، كما كانت مرتعا للصحابة والتابعين والمحدثين والأدباء وأهل البيت وأما مدرسة الرأي التي قيل أن أبا حنيفة قطبها فقد كان عَلْقمة بن قيس النخعي من أبرز تلاميذ عبدالله بن مسعود الصحابي مؤسس تيار الرأي، وهكذا نرى أن العراق هوالمهد الذي تربت فيه مدرسة الرأي.
