أصبح يُنظر إلى النحو (والصواتة على وجه التحديد) على أنه نسق للقوى المتصارعة. فهناك أصوات "تتصارع" مع أصوات أخرى لتنتصر عليها وبالتالي تُشكل النظام الصوتي الخاص بلغة معينة، كما أن هناك سيرورات صواتية تتنافس فيما بينها للتأثير على البنية الصوتية. وتختلف اللغات بناء على هذه التنافسية وعلى من له تأثير كبير لينتصر، ليكون تنميط اللغات صوتيا مبنيا على هذا الأساس. ويتم تضمين هذه التنافسية في قيود متفاعلة، تنتظم في سلميات مرتبة على أساس القوة والتأثير، ويتم انتقاء الصورة (أو الخرْج) التي تحترم هذه القيود العليا. ولا تكون الصورة إلا أمثلية، أي أنها قد تخرق بعض القيود الدنيا.
