روائي فرنسي، درس الحقوق، ولكنه عكف على التأليف الأدبي. أصيب بمرض عصبي جعله يمكث طويلاً في كرواسيه. كان أول مؤلف مشهور له: « التربية العاطفية » (1843 – 1845)، ثم « مدام بوفاري » 1857 التي تمتاز بواقعيتها وروعة أسلوبها، والتي أثارت قضية الأدب المكشوف. ثم تابع تأليف رواياته المشهورة، منها: « سالامبو » 1862، و« تجربة القديس أنطونيوس » 1874، ويعتبر فلوبير مثلاً أعلى للكاتب الموضوعي، الذي يكتب بأسلوب دقيق، ويختار اللفظ المناسب والعبارة الملاءمة.

"قبل الآب "روو" ذات صباح يحمل إلى "شارل" أجر علاج ساقه: خمسة وسبعين فرنكاً من القطع فئة الأربعين سنتاً، وديكاً رومياً!,, وكان قد علم بمصابه فراح يواسيه ما وسعه، قائلاً وهو يربت كتفه: "إنني أدرك مدى مصابك، فقد مرت بي نفس التجربة... لكنت كنت أنطلق في الحقول-بعد أن فقت زوجتي المسكينة-للأخلو إلى نفسي، فأجثو عند ساق إحدى الأشدار أكبي وأنادي الله، وأهرف له بأقوال سخيفة!.. وكم وددت لو أنني أصبحت مثل آكل الحشرات المعروف باسم "الخلد"، الذي أراه على الأغصان والديدان تتلوى في بطنه!.. بل لقد ذهبت إلى حد أن تمنيت لو أنني نفقت كالدابة.. كنت إذا ما ذكرت أن سواي من الأزواج يضمون بين أذرعهم-في تلك اللحظة-زوجات لطيفات صالحات، أدق الأرض بعصاي في عنف!... كنت شبه مجنون، حتى لقد أمسكت عن الطعام. وكان مجرد التفكير في الذهاب إلى المقهى يثير اشمئزازي!.. لعلك لا تصدق!.. على أن الأيام تتابعت، يطرد كل منها الآخر في رفق… وأقبل ربيع في أعقاب شتاء، وخريف ذيل صيف.. وما لبث كل شيء أن تسرب رويداً وزايلني قطرة إثر قطرة.. أو بالأحرى، رسب في أعماقي، إذ لا بد من أن يبقى شيء في أغوار النفس، أو لا بد-كما يقولون-من أن يبقى فوق الصدر ثقل جاثم!..".
تعتبر هذه الرواية "مدام بوفاري" من الأعمال الأدبية الخالدة، والتي أحدثت حينها ضجة كبيرة لما فيها من إباحيات، تمّ بسببها مقاضاة الكاتب والناشر وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن هذا الكتاب يتضمن نصوص مرافعة الاتهام والدفاع والحكم في محاكمة فلوبير وناشر روايته.
إنكم لستم ممن يدينون الكتب لبضعة أسطر. بل أنتم من اولئك الذين يحكمون قبل كل شيء على الفكرة والوسائل المستعملة. والذين سيطرحون على انفسهم ذلك السؤال الذي ابتدأت به مرافعتي. والذي أنهيها به: هل قراءة مثل هذا الكتاب توحي بحب الرذيلة ام توحي ببشاعة الرذيلة؟ إن قراءة هذا الكتاب لا يمكن ان تولد اثراً غير الذي ولّدته. وهو أن هذا الكتاب ممتاز في مجموعه...
