العودة الراهنة إلى محمد مندور (1907 -1965)، تعنى أن أعماله ما زالت تشرع آفاقها ومهمتها الأخصب: أن تكتب نفسها، بالاعتماد على نفسها، وعلى قضاياها المستدامة، وبخاصة ما يتصل منها بفهم وتقييم مرحلة مهمة للثقافة المصرية بين ثلاثينيات القرن الماضى وستينياته، لم تكن الترجمة مجرد فن زاوله مندور، بل كانت كذلك من مداراته الأثيرة، شغلته منذ سنته الأولى فى بعثته إلى فرنسا، حسن ترجم قصائد للشاعر الفرنسى ألفريد دوفينى. وبخلاف رواية فلوبير، ترجم "دفاعاً عن الأدب" لجورج ديهاميل، و"من الحكيم القديم إلى المواطن الحديث" لسلتان بوجليه وأنطوان برييه، و"تاريخ إعلان حقوق الإنسان" لألبير باييه، إضافة إلى "قصص رومانية" و"المدينة الإغريقية" و"نزوات ماريان وليالى أكتوبر ومايو وأغسطس" لألفرد دى موسيه.
