بالمقارنة مع (المواطن كين) أو مع (سيدة من شانغهاي), لن يكون من الممكن اعتبار (المحاكمة) أفضل أفلام أورسون ويلز. ومع هذا, ربما كان هذا الفيلم المقتبس من رواية كافكا المعروفة بالاسم نفسه, الفيلم الويلزي الذي أثار القدر الأكبر من النقاش, وبالتحديد لأنه مقتبس من كافكا. وبالنسبة الى المكتبة السينمائية, كان هذا العامل, العامل الحاسم في اختيار (المحاكمة) ككتاب أول في سلسلة (الأفلام الكبيرة). بمعنى أن إشكالية الاقتباس السينمائي عن عمل أدبي مطروحة هنا في زخمها كله, مما يجعل نشر السيناريو كاملاً, أكثر من عملية إحياء للفيلم, مطبوعاً على الورق هذه المرة. فهذا النشر للسيناريو, مصحوباً بالعديد من الدراسات عن الفيلم وعن الاقتباس الذي كان في أصل هذا الفيلم, وإن كانت دراسات غلب عليها طابع الإيجاز والتركيز, إنما يندرج لتناول إشكالية السينما في علاقتها بالفنون الأخرى.
