عملت حنّه آرنت منذ أن حطت الرحال في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في بداية الخمسينيات من القرن العشرين على مواصلة بحوثها في الفلسفة السياسية. فكان من بين دروسها أن كتبت ثلاثية متكاملة المشارب، حللت فيها أبعاد الحياة السياسية المعاصرة فلسفيًا، فكانت بذلك سبّاقة في عدّة مجالات لم يقع التطرّق إليها من قبل. وتناولت هذه الثلاثية على التوالي أوّلاً "الإمبريالية" بأشكالها القديمة والحديثة وحتى المعاصرة إلى حدود الحرب العالمية الثانية، ثمّ كرّست الثاني للحديث عن "المعادة للسامية". وهو موضوع تناوله العديد من قبلها من وجهة نظر تاريخية فقط مثل بيار – فيدال ناكي وليون بولياكوف الذي رأي في تأليفه من جزأين "تاريخ المعاداة للسامية" بأنّ هذا الشعور، خاصة ضدّ اليهود، متأصل لدى البشرية. غير أنّ حنّه آرنت تناولت الموضوع من الناحية الفلسفية الدينية، من جذورها لكي تخلص إلى ما وصلت إليه النازية بحلها "النهائي" للقضاء على اليهود، متغافلة عن دور الصهيونية في تأجيج المشاعر خدمة لمشروعها. وربّما يعود هذا إلى أنّ حنّه آرنت، عندما قامت بدراسة هذه الظاهرة، في الخمسينيات من القرن الماضي، كانت الصهيونية تعتبر آنذاك في المحافل الدولية والأوساط السياسية والأكاديمية الأمريكية كحركة تحرّر من حصيلة الهولوكوست، أي أبستمولوجيا "القربان". أمّا الجزء الثالث من هذه الثلاثية، فقد تناولت فيه حنّه آرنت "المنظومة الشمولية"، وهو محلّ هذه الترجمة. لقد حاولت حنّه آرنت في هذا التأليف اتباع تمشي علم السياسة الكلاسيكي، انطلاقًا من أرسطو إلى توكفيل مرورًا بغيرهما مثل ماكيافيل ومونتسكيو، قصد تحديد جوهر هذه المنظومة التي اعتبرتها غير مسبوقة وغير معروفة، ألا وهي " المنظومة الشمولية ".
