دوّن الباحث في هذا الكتاب سيرة الدكتور كرنيليوس الذي لعب دوراً فعالاً في نهضة الديار الشامية في القرن التاسع عشر وذلك، بفضل ما غرس في ميدان نشر العلوم، تأسيساً للمدارس وتعليماً للطلاب وتأليفاً وترجمة للكتب. وقد استهل الباحث تلك السيرة بنبذة حول الحياة الفكرية والثقافية في الديار الشامية في النصف الأول من القرن التاسع عشر وذلك قبل وصول الدكتور فان ديك في الثاني من نيسان عام 1840، مستبقاً ذلك بسيرته: نشاطه الديني، والتعليمي، والعلمي، وبمكانته العلمية، وألحق ذلك بملاحق ضمت مذكراته، وخطبته السنوية في المجتمع العلمي، وبخطاب "أدون لوس" في المعرفة والعلم والحكمة.
