إن إسباغ صفة "رجل سابق لعصره" على المعلم بطرس البستاني ليس من باب المبالغة والمغالاة، لأن الأعمال المهمة والمفيدة التي خلفها لنا هذا "المحب للوطن" تدل دلالة واضحة على هذه أن الصفة ليست مجانية للحقيقة ولا مغايرة لها بشيء، لا بل أن لسان حاله يقول:"هذه آثارنا تدل علينا". لقد قام بوضع مآثر علمية مميزة لتعميم المعرفة تتناول حقولاً فكرية ونواحي اجتماعية متعددة باللغة العربية، لا يزال أبناء الضاد في عصرنا هذا يعتمدون عليها في دراساتهم وأبحاثهم، تشهد لهم بالريادة وتصب السبق، وتعتبره من أهم أركان النهضة-الحديثة في القرن التاسع عشر.
هذا ولم يقتصر أثر المعلم بطرس البستاني على أبناء القرن التاسع عشر فقط، بل تعدى ذلك إلى أبناء القرن العشرين حيث يذكر الدكتور فؤاد أفرام البستاني ما للمعلم بطرس البستاني من تأثير عليه فيقول: "أخذت من المعلم بطرس البستاني فكرة إفادة النشء، وهو الذي كانت كل أشغاله في سبيل التربية وتحضير نشء مثقف يكون في المستوى الحضاري اللائق.
وفي هذا الكتاب دراسة تتوخى إلقاء الضوء على إسهامات المعلم بطرس البستاني الفكرية والتي كانت في حينها سابقة لعصرها وقد جاء ذلك ضمن دراسة تناولت أولاً حياته وأعماله ومن ثم جولة دراسية في أفق مجلة الجنان التي أسسها ورأس تحريرها، وذلك بهدف بيان خطتها وسياستها وأبوابها وأهم مواضيعها السياسية والاجتماعية والجنان والصحف العربية المعاصرة ومناظراتها دون إغفال الحديث عن الأجواء العميقة لحرية الرأي التي كانت سائدة في ذلك الزمن.
