كثير من الذين أخذوا عن بيئتهم منذ حداثتهم المعتقدات العائلية والدينية يستفيقون في عمر معين بنتيجة التجربة التي يكتسبونها من عالم الأشياء والناس، فيطور كثير منهم أفكارهم آنذاك، ولكنهم وأن كفوا عن الاعتقاد بالأساطير، وبأنواع الجن الخيرة والشريرة فهم لا يذهبون أبعد من ذلك، ولا يغيرون محور حياتهم، لكن بعضهم لا يتوقفون عند هذا الحد، بل يذهب بهم الأمر إلى التخلي عن العادات التي كانت تتفق ومعتقداتهم فيثيرون بجرأتهم هذه استنكار بيئتهم فيتهمون في أغلب الأحيان بأنهم سعوا لتحقيق عكس ما كانوا ينشدون.
وينطبق هذا الوضع على أرنست رينان. فالبشرية برأيه متعلقة بالدين، ومن الوبال ألا تكون كذلك، لأنه يشعر بأن تعلقه بالدين يلف كل كيانه. لكنه يعتبر في نظر أولئك الذين يحولون الدين إلى قيام ببعض الشعائر البسيطة، والممارسات السطحية، صاحب فكر شيطاني، في حين أن ما يعتبره رينان الأمر الأساسي الوحيد هو ما يدعوه "المثال الأعلى" و"الإلهي".
